When You Need Broken Key Extraction in St. Charles

Old keys get brittle over time and snap right where you'd least expect it. Humidity near the Missouri River confluence swells wood frames and warps metal. That extra stress on a key can cause it to break in the lock. We see this a lot in the Frenchtown area where original mortise locks and skeleton keys are still in use. Cheap builder-grade cylinders in newer subdivisions like Bogey Hills wear out within a few years. A worn cylinder grabs the key wrong and snaps it. Don't try to dig it out with pliers or a knife. That usually pushes the broken piece deeper and can damage the pins inside the lock cylinder.[1]

Common Cases

Snapped House Key

Old or worn keys break off in front door locks, especially on historic Frenchtown hardware. Many of these homes still use original locks from decades ago. The metal inside gets thin and brittle after years of daily use. A key that looks fine can still snap under normal pressure. Homeowners often notice the lock sticking before the key finally gives out. Once it breaks off inside, the door can become hard to open.

Broken Car Key

Key fobs and blades snap in ignitions and door locks, leaving you stuck in a parking lot.

Stuck Deadbolt Key

Frozen deadbolts after an ice storm often snap a key when you force it to turn.

Worn Cylinder Break

Cheap builder-grade cylinders in newer homes wear down and grip keys wrong until they snap. These locks often come standard in new construction across town. The metal pins inside are softer and wear faster than higher grade models. After a year or two, the key can start sticking on every turn. Many homeowners don't notice the wear until the key finally breaks off inside. Replacing the cylinder with a sturdier one often stops the problem from coming back.

Commercial Door Break

Heavy daily use on Main Street business doors wears keys thin until they give out.

Shed or Gate Lock

Rusty padlocks near the river confluence corrode and grab keys tight until they break. The damp air off the water speeds up rust on metal shackles and pins. Sheds and gates close to the bank often show the worst wear. Boat owners who lock up gear near the docks run into this a lot. Once rust builds up inside the lock body, keys stop turning smoothly. A small twist is often all it takes to snap the metal clean off.

I had a great experience at ASAP Lock & Key! Collin was incredibly friendly and helpful. He helped me replace the shell on my car key, cut it for me, and even walked outside with me to make sure everything worked properly before I left.

I really appreciated the extra effort and attention to detail. He could have simply handed me the key and sent me on my way, but he took the time to make sure everything was working and that I was taken care of. That kind of customer service really stands out. Thank you, Collin, for the great service!

I have used this company twice. Once to get a key cut for a CanAm Spyder the second time to get a round key made for a small trailer you pull behind a motorcycle. Both times the staff went over and above to take care of me. Both times they were slightly unusual situations. Excellent customer service and reasonable prices. I will be using this company every time I need locksmith services, even though there are closer ones to my house. Thanks guys!

I locked myself out of our new house this morning and after talking with questionable mobile service locksmiths, I found ASAP and called and was very happy that someone could come right out to get me in. He was friendly and professional! We bought the house without any keys so he offered to re-key the doors for us, which was exactly what we needed! I would highly recommend them! You can trust them!

Questions Answered

Broken Key Extraction FAQs

Here are answers to the questions we hear most about broken key extraction. Call us if you need more details about your situation.

  • Can you get a broken key out without replacing my lock?

Yes, most of the time we remove the broken piece and your lock keeps working fine. We only suggest replacement if the cylinder itself is damaged.

  • How long does broken key extraction take?

Most jobs take about 15 minutes once we arrive. Deeper breaks or older mortise locks can take a bit longer.

  • What should I do if my key breaks in the lock?

Don't try to dig it out or force the lock to turn. Call us and leave the fragment alone until we arrive.

  • Do you offer broken key extraction at night?

Yes, we answer calls 24/7 for broken key emergencies. A locksmith can come out any time, day or night.

  • Will extraction damage my lock?

We use specialty tools built to pull the fragment out without scratching or wrecking the cylinder. Most locks test fine right after.

  • How much does broken key extraction cost?

Yes, in most cases. If the broken piece is close to the opening, we can often remove it without pulling the cylinder apart. Deeper breaks may need more work, but we always try the simplest method first.

  • Can A Broken Key Damage My Lock

It can if it's forced or left too long. Rust and pressure from trying to turn a broken piece can wear down pins and springs. Getting it out quickly lowers the chance of lasting damage.
