When You Need Rekeying Locks in St Charles

Most calls we get come after a move, a breakup, or a lost key that never turned up. Rekeying swaps the inner pins of your existing lock so old keys stop working, without replacing the whole hardware.[1] We see a lot of this in spring when homes in New Town and Cottleville-adjacent neighborhoods change hands. Landlords also call us between tenants to protect the next renter. If you bought a house in the historic Frenchtown district, odds are the original hardware has seen many owners. You'd probably be surprised how many. Don't wait until something feels off. A stranger with an old key is a risk you don't need.

Fast
Most rekeys finish in under an hour, often while you wait.
100%
Old keys stop working the moment we finish the job.

We answer emergency calls day or night, any day of the week.
Common Jobs

New Homeowners

You never know how many keys the last owner handed out. We rekey every exterior lock to match one new key.

Lost or Stolen Keys

A missing key means someone out there could open your door. We fix that in one visit.

Ending a Lease or Tenancy

Landlords across St Charles County call us between renters to protect the next person moving in.

Divorce or Roommate Changes

When a household splits up, rekeying is the fastest way to make sure only current residents have access.

Historic Hardware Upgrades

Frenchtown homes with original mortise locks need careful rekeying that respects the old hardware, not a cheap replacement.

Builder-Grade Cylinder Failure

Newer subdivisions like Beau Chateau often have cheap cylinders that wear out in five to seven years.

Fair Pricing

Rekeying Locks Cost in St Charles

Price depends on how many locks you need done and the type of hardware involved. A standard Kwikset or Schlage deadbolt costs less in newer Bogey Hills subdivision homes. Restoring an original mortise lock in a Frenchtown historic property costs more. Rekeying resets the internal pins to match a new key. It's almost always cheaper than full lock replacement.[1] We quote the job before we start. You'll know the price upfront.

✓ You get an upfront price before any work begins.
✓ No hidden fees added once we're already at your door.
✓ Senior and military discounts apply to most rekeying jobs.
Typical price range
$60 - $250
The number of locks you need rekeyed changes the total cost.
Historic or antique hardware takes more time and skill than builder-grade locks.
High-security cylinders cost more to rekey than standard residential locks.
After-hours or emergency calls carry a small added fee.

I had a great experience at ASAP Lock & Key! Collin was incredibly friendly and helpful. He helped me replace the shell on my car key, cut it for me, and even walked outside with me to make sure everything worked properly before I left.

I really appreciated the extra effort and attention to detail. He could have simply handed me the key and sent me on my way, but he took the time to make sure everything was working and that I was taken care of. That kind of customer service really stands out. Thank you, Collin, for the great service!

I have used this company twice. Once to get a key cut for a CanAm Spyder the second time to get a round key made for a small trailer you pull behind a motorcycle. Both times the staff went over and above to take care of me. Both times they were slightly unusual situations. Excellent customer service and reasonable prices. I will be using this company every time I need locksmith services, even though there are closer ones to my house. Thanks guys!

I locked myself out of our new house this morning and after talking with questionable mobile service locksmiths, I found ASAP and called and was very happy that someone could come right out to get me in. He was friendly and professional! We bought the house without any keys so he offered to re-key the doors for us, which was exactly what we needed! I would highly recommend them! You can trust them!

Outstanding experience. My son locked his keys in his golf bag and hustled over and helped out within 15 minutes. They were extremely helpful and reasonably priced. I highly recommend them.

Questions

Rekeying Locks Questions

Here are the questions St Charles homeowners ask us most about rekeying.

  • How much does rekeying locks cost in St Charles?

Most single-lock jobs run between $60 and $120, with whole-house jobs landing higher depending on door count. Historic hardware in Frenchtown costs more due to its age. We always quote the price before starting.

  • How long does rekeying take?

A single lock usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. A full home with four or five exterior doors typically finishes in under an hour. We test every lock before we leave.

  • Can I rekey a lock myself?

You can buy a rekeying kit, but it's easy to damage the pins or misalign the cylinder. We've seen DIY jobs that locked homeowners out entirely. A professional rekey takes less time and avoids that risk.

  • Is rekeying better than replacing the whole lock?

Rekeying costs less and keeps your existing hardware, which matters for historic doors in the Main Street area. Replacement makes more sense if the lock itself is worn out or damaged. We'll tell you honestly which one your door needs.

  • How fast can you get someone out after a lost key?

We treat lost keys as urgent and can usually get to you the same day. During ice storm season, calls spike and we prioritize lockout risks first. Call us and we'll give you a real time window.

  • What are signs my locks need rekeying?

A sticky or hard-turning deadbolt, a recent move, or an ex-tenant with a key are all signs. Humidity near the river confluence also swells doors and misaligns locks, which can mimic a rekeying issue. We check both the lock and the frame when we visit.

  • Do you rekey smart locks too?

Yes, we rekey and service smart locks common in New Town at St. Charles, including HOA-approved models. Smart locks still use a physical cylinder in most cases, so rekeying works the same way. We'll check your HOA's hardware rules if you're unsure.
